CANI

When I worked with Tony Robbins I got to meet a lot of interesting people. One of the people I met was Dr. W. Edwards Deming, who invented Total Quality Management. Dr. Deming’s philosophy was based on respecting people, making them feel safe, and always striving for the greatest quality. His philosophy revolutionized Japan which was at the time known for poor quality and transformed it into being known for quality. This is where CANI came from. It means Constant and Never-ending Improvement. Platoon practices this philosophy by making sure that we start with the right material. Our process for selecting instructors is designed to make sure that there are qualified, seasoned, certified and knowledgeable. We call candidates IC’s or Instructor Candidates. We go a step further and I personally interview each person to get to know them, who they are, and to figure out what drives them, what motivates them and whether they’ll fit into our culture. Then they do a 90 minute round table with five instructors that find out more about what they know in depth and really who they are. One of the things we look for is that they have a degree, an accepted certification…

Villanova University Boot Camp

Recently we were asked by Villanova university to conduct a couple of Boot Camp on their campus for freshman. This was planned months in advance as the day approaches we were excited and there were a lot of people interested. At one point enrollment reached about 100. And fortunately so did the temperature on the day we were supposed to do the event. The real feel temperature that day was over 100. Our instructor showed up with plenty of water and ready for anything. Because of the large expected turnout we sent to Instructor’s one of which was Bill Manley his previous job was as a emergency medical technician. Luckily the class went off without a hitch. In 20 years of doing Boot Camp’s we learned a thing or two and we carefully train the people that were during enough to show up. We also wanted them free personal training for them and a friend. Bottom line drink a lot of water and stay hydrated if you think hydrated your still drink more

Structure, Discipline, Accountability & Sacrifice

Some people say luck plays a great part in success. I agree as long as you have a solid foundation of accountability, discipline, structure and sacrifice. Accountability to yourself and others meaning you do what you say, when you say you’re going to do it, every single time to the best of your ability. I’m lucky and I have a lot of people that give me frequent feedback to make sure I’m holding myself and others accountable. Discipline to me means cold morning desire. What this means to me is when you get out of the warm bed and your feet hit the cold floor you don’t let that stop you but power through to the promise land. One of the ways that I flex this muscle is by only taking showers as cold as they will go. Structure to me means you have a way of doing things and have systems behind what you do. I believe when the going gets tough the tough rely on systems to get them through. Sacrifice is the key to any venture. If there’s nothing to lose them there’s generally nothing to gain. Sacrificing time is more precious than sacrificing money. You can…

Incorporate Rowing Into Your Next Session

Rowing is NOT just for the Olympics – Learn to “Erg” today! The Concept 2 Indoor Rower is one of the fitness world’s most overlooked cardiovascular training tools. The lack of appreciation for what the rower offers is prevalent to the degree that if it wasn’t for CrossFit’s mainstream success, it would still be that dust collector in the back of the gym that makes for a great coat rack. However, the benefits of the rower extend far beyond its ability to get the heart rate up at the end of a high intensity training session, as even CrossFit has neglected to illustrate what it brings to fitness. The “erg”, as it is referred to by those who row on the river, is a full body, low impact, aerobic/anaerobic machine that provides effort-based feedback on every stroke (put simply, the harder you pull the more tired you will become). The positive benefits of the erg, coupled with the fact that the mechanics of the stroke are simple to learn, make it a safe and effective alternative to other forms of cardio such as running and biking. The fundamentals of rowing can be taught to people of all ages and fitness…
